The promotion of healthy blood cholesterol has become a national obsession resulting in the sale of billions of dollars worth of cholesterol lowering drugs, mainly of the statin type. Lowering blood cholesterol with statin drugs in groups of individuals that are at high risk for cardiovascular disease and stroke is documented to be cost effective and appropriate in medical practice. What may be questioned about these drugs is the use as a first line option to lower blood cholesterol without paying appropriate attention to lifestyle adjustments and nutritional interventions to promote a healthy blood cholesterol level. The statin group of drugs causes common side effects and, on occasion, they cause serious adverse effects including, skin rashes, liver problems and severe damage to muscles that can result in death. Dr. Holt believes that the first line option to deal with cholesterol problems involves lifestyle change with specific dietary adjustments and the use of dietary supplements or foods that are known to lower bad forms of cholesterol (low density lipoproteins, LDL) and increase good forms of cholesterol (high density lipoproteins, HDL).
